Eggs, Angry Birds and Marilyn Monroe--a post by Jason

July 14th

Last full day in Jerusalem.  Tomorrow we head to Natalie and Gideon’s place just a few kms south of Jerusalem.  We had a slow morning leaving the hotel, and Eli was successful getting 2 hard-boiled eggs for Eva without getting caught by the breakfast guy.
We left the hotel around 11:00 so the kids could finish shopping on Saleh el Din street and in the Old City.  Eva got several shirts and some shoes, and both kids got Jerusalem t-shirts.  Eli got an angry birds-superhero-Jerusalem t-shirt while Eva got a Marilyn Monroe t-shirt (nothing to do with Jerusalem).  They could have at least written Jerusalem on it like Eli’s—because I’m not sure what Angry Superheroes have to do with Jerusalem either.  You can also see his drawing of the shirt:

I also had a chance to let the kids try kenafe, an Arabic sweet with cheese, shredded wheat, pistachio, sugar water, and I’m not sure what else.  It’s delicious.  Eli wouldn’t try it, but Eva did and liked it.  We split this piece.  We then hit the air-conditioned pizza place one more time for lunch, and headed back to our favorite park for the kids to play in the water and enjoy the shade.

The kids enjoyed the park, which we found out was Independence Park, one last time.  I told them that they could get their feet wet, and for Eli this apparently meant going swimming.  We hung out here for a few hours, until they were mostly dry.  The kids noted the broad spectrum of people at the park, from Israelis in their underwear drinking beer and getting some sun to Muslim women with head coverings playing with their kids.

Apparently this is what Alysia did all day:

  1. Jason, it is well known that "get your feet wet" is translated to 5 year olds as "go ahead and submerge your entire body."

I love the Eli illustrations throughout the blog.
